After spending most of my 20s doing all the “right” things and feeling unfulfilled in my career, I decided to flip the script. In 2011, when I was 27, I enrolled in Pastry School and my world opened right up. Once I started nurturing my passion, each step of my journey has felt easy, and more importantly, joyful! I’ve worked in nearly every facet of the food industry – from marketing and operations, to baking and decorating. Each experience I’ve had, from working on the pastry line in NYC restaurants, to managing high volume NYC bakeries, has paved the way for the realization of my lifelong dream – owning my own business.
I opened Marlie Bakes Cakes in 2023 because I wanted to bring joy to people, through food, just like Nanny Engel used to. Not just any food, magically delicious dessert that looks as good as it tastes. I wanted to foster lasting relationships with my clients, not just assist them with a single transaction. My cakes and treats are a luxury experience from start to finish, because life’s milestones are important and deserve to be honored.
I wish I could go back and tell that 25-year-old version of myself not to worry – because one day she will be surrounded by cakes and edible glitter and she’ll love every minute of her “job.”
My Story
Welcome! I’m Marlie, a Wedding & Celebration Cake Designer and the owner and founder of Marlie Bakes Cakes. I specialize in one-of-a-kind, luxury cakes and treats that are crafted with love, to honor the special moments in your life.
While I’m presently surrounded by butter and sugar every day, being a cake designer wasn’t my first career. It took time, and some life experience, before I began to look inward and fully support my lifelong passion for baking.
I’ve been baking since I was a little girl. I grew up next to my grandmother, who’s apple pies were legendary – the volume of pastry exploding from her tiny apartment kitchenette every fall was incredible. From an early age I saw the impact her baking had on our family and friends -it brought folks together in such a special way. I had no idea that I would one day follow in her footsteps of sharing joy through food.
